TCPware
TCPware was a proprietary TCP/IP software stack developed by Process Software Corporation for the OpenVMS operating system. It provided a comprehensive suite of networking services, allowing OpenVMS systems to communicate with other systems using the TCP/IP protocol suite.
TCPware was designed to integrate tightly with OpenVMS, leveraging its features for security, process management, and resource allocation. It offered a wide range of applications and utilities, including:
- FTP (File Transfer Protocol): For transferring files between systems.
- Telnet: For remote login to other systems.
- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol): For sending and receiving email.
- DNS (Domain Name System): For resolving domain names to IP addresses.
- NFS (Network File System): For sharing files across a network.
- Web Server: For hosting websites.
TCPware competed with other TCP/IP stacks for OpenVMS, such as DECnet-Plus and MultiNet. It was known for its performance, reliability, and comprehensive feature set. Process Software was acquired by HP (Hewlett-Packard) in 2004. HP continued to support and develop TCPware for a period before eventually phasing it out in favor of other networking solutions.
