9th Squadron (JASDF)

The 9th Squadron (第9飛行隊, Dai-kyū Hikōtai) was a squadron of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) based at Nyutabaru Air Base in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. It was equipped with Mitsubishi F-4EJ Kai Phantom II fighter aircraft.

The squadron was primarily responsible for air defense of southern Japan and also performed tactical reconnaissance duties. It was formed on July 18, 1961, at Matsushima Air Base in Miyagi Prefecture, initially operating the F-86F Sabre. In 1964, the squadron relocated to Tsuiki Air Base in Fukuoka Prefecture, before ultimately moving to Nyutabaru in 1976.

The 9th Squadron transitioned to the F-4EJ Kai in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These upgraded Phantoms were equipped with improved radar and navigation systems, enabling them to carry more advanced air-to-air missiles. The squadron's Phantoms were known for their distinctive tail markings, which featured a black panther.

Due to the aging F-4 Phantom fleet, the 9th Squadron was officially disbanded on March 28, 2019. Its role in air defense was assumed by other JASDF units operating more modern aircraft.
