Will Evans (comedian)

Will Evans (born William Evans, date of birth unknown, died February 8, 1956) was a popular British comedian, actor, and playwright of the music hall and variety stage. He was known for his character work, often portraying working-class figures such as navvies, carpenters, and policemen.

Evans rose to prominence in the early 20th century with his energetic and often chaotic performances. He was renowned for his elaborate stage sets and props, often incorporating real machinery and creating a sense of realism in his performances. One of his most famous sketches involved him playing a navvy operating a malfunctioning steamroller.

Evans wrote and starred in numerous plays and sketches, many of which became staples of the music hall repertoire. His works were characterised by their broad humour, slapstick comedy, and affectionate portrayal of working-class life. He was considered one of the leading comedians of his era and was known for his generosity towards other performers.

After a successful career in music hall and variety, Evans transitioned to film, appearing in several British comedies. He remained a popular performer until his death in 1956.
