Kettil Karlsson (Vasa)

Kettil Karlsson (Vasa) (c. 1433 – 11 August 1465) was a Swedish clergyman, diplomat, and statesman who served as the Bishop of Linköping from 1459 to 1465, and as the Regent of Sweden during the minority of King Charles VIII (Charles Knutsson Bonde) from 1464 to 1465. He was a member of the influential Vasa family.

Born into a prominent noble family, Kettil pursued a career in the church, quickly rising through the ranks to become Bishop of Linköping. He played a crucial role in the political turmoil of the mid-15th century, a period marked by power struggles between pro-Union (Kalmar Union) and anti-Union factions within Sweden.

Following a rebellion against King Christian I of Denmark (who also ruled Sweden at the time), Charles VIII was briefly restored to the Swedish throne in 1464. However, due to Charles's unpopularity and the continued instability, the Swedish Council of the Realm (Riksråd) appointed Kettil Karlsson as Regent. He skillfully navigated the complex political landscape, attempting to maintain order and Swedish independence amidst Danish interference.

Kettil's regency was relatively short-lived. He died unexpectedly in August 1465, likely from plague, leaving a power vacuum that ultimately led to the return of Christian I to power and the re-establishment of the Kalmar Union's authority over Sweden. Despite his brief time as Regent, Kettil Karlsson (Vasa) is remembered as a significant figure in Swedish history, demonstrating a commitment to Swedish autonomy and showcasing the political influence of the Vasa family. He is interred in Linköping Cathedral.
