BMW R32
The BMW R32 is generally considered the first motorcycle produced by BMW. It was designed by Max Friz and introduced in 1923. The R32 featured a flat-twin (boxer) engine with shaft drive, a configuration that would become a hallmark of BMW motorcycles for decades to come. Its engine was a 494cc side-valve unit. The R32 established a distinct design philosophy with its longitudinally mounted engine and shaft drive, differentiating it from many contemporary motorcycles. It was a commercially successful model and helped establish BMW as a motorcycle manufacturer. Its design and engineering principles influenced subsequent BMW motorcycle models.
