TV Markaz

TV Markaz (Persian: تلویزیون مرکز, Tajik: Телевизиони Марказӣ) was the primary state-owned television channel in Tajikistan during the Soviet era and the early years of independence. Literally translated, "TV Markaz" means "Central Television" or "Television Center."

As the main channel, it broadcast a wide range of programming, including news, current affairs, cultural shows, educational programs, and entertainment. During the Soviet period, a significant portion of its content originated from Central Television in Moscow, dubbed or subtitled into Tajik. Local programming was also produced to reflect Tajik culture and language.

Following Tajikistan's independence in 1991, TV Markaz continued to be a dominant force in the country's media landscape. It played a crucial role in shaping public opinion and disseminating information during the turbulent years of the Tajikistani Civil War (1992-1997). Over time, its name and branding may have evolved to reflect the changing political and media environment in Tajikistan, and new television channels emerged. While the specific organizational structure and current programming of the channel may have changed, the historical significance of TV Markaz as the foundational television broadcaster in Tajikistan remains important.
