Borj Nord

Borj Nord is a fortress located on a hill overlooking the city of Fez, Morocco. Built in 1582 by the Saadi dynasty under Sultan Ahmed al-Mansur, it is one of two major forts constructed to provide security and control over the city, the other being Borj Sud, located on the opposite hill.

Borj Nord's primary function was military, designed to house a large garrison and provide artillery cover for Fez. Its strategic location allowed for a commanding view of the city and the surrounding landscape, making it difficult for potential invaders to approach undetected. The fortress features a distinctive star-shaped plan, reflecting the military architecture of the time, influenced by European designs and potentially Ottoman military engineering.

Over the centuries, Borj Nord served various purposes, including as a prison and a barracks. In the 20th century, it was converted into a museum. The Arms Museum of Fez (Musée des Armes) occupies the fortress today, displaying a diverse collection of weaponry from around the world, spanning different historical periods. The museum's collection includes European, Middle Eastern, and Moroccan arms, showcasing the evolution of military technology and its impact on global history. Borj Nord thus serves as both a historical monument and a cultural institution, offering visitors insights into Morocco's military past and its connections to the wider world. Its imposing presence continues to dominate the Fez skyline, a reminder of the city's rich and complex history.
