Satnam

Satnam (ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ) is a compound word used in Sikhism, primarily meaning "True Name" or "Truth is the Name." It is a central concept in Sikh theology, referring to the one God, the ultimate reality, and the divine essence that permeates all of creation.

In the Sikh sacred scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, Satnam is often found in the Mul Mantar, the opening verse and foundational statement of Sikh belief. The Mul Mantar describes the attributes of God, beginning with "Ik Onkar" (One God) followed by "Satnam."

The term is used in meditation and chanting practices within Sikhism, intended to help individuals connect with the divine truth and realize their spiritual potential. Recitation or contemplation of Satnam is believed to bring inner peace, understanding, and liberation from suffering.

While Satnam is closely associated with Sikhism, the underlying concept of the True Name of God resonates with similar ideas found in other religious and spiritual traditions. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing and connecting with the divine reality that exists beyond the limitations of the physical world.

The precise pronunciation and understanding of Satnam can vary among different Sikh traditions and individuals. However, the core meaning remains consistent: to acknowledge and affirm the eternal truth and the divine name as the source of all existence.
