Undaria

Undaria is a genus of brown algae (Phaeophyceae) belonging to the family Alariaceae. The most well-known and commercially significant species within this genus is Undaria pinnatifida, commonly known as wakame.

Undaria pinnatifida is a large, edible seaweed native to the coasts of Japan, Korea, and China. It has been introduced to many other regions globally, often through ballast water of ships, and has become an invasive species in some areas, including parts of Europe, Australasia, and the Americas. Its rapid growth and ability to outcompete native species can cause ecological disruption.

Wakame is characterized by its ruffled, fern-like blades, a distinct midrib, and a brownish-green color. It is typically harvested in the spring and is a popular ingredient in Asian cuisine, particularly in soups and salads. Nutritionally, wakame is a good source of iodine, calcium, iron, and various vitamins.

The cultivation of Undaria pinnatifida is a significant aquaculture industry in several countries. It is typically grown on ropes suspended in the ocean. Efforts are also underway to develop methods to control its spread in regions where it is considered an invasive species. Research continues into the ecological impacts of Undaria pinnatifida invasions and potential management strategies.
