ORP Sęp

ORP Sęp refers to several submarines that have served in the Polish Navy (Marynarka Wojenna). The name, meaning "Vulture" in Polish, reflects the warship's predatory role. At least three submarines have borne this name:

  • ORP Sęp (1938): A minelaying submarine built in the Netherlands by the Rotterdamsche Droogdok Maatschappij (RDM) shipyard. Launched in 1938, she served during World War II. After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, she escaped to neutral Sweden and was interned there. She returned to Poland in 1945 and served until 1969.

  • ORP Sęp (Project 613): A Soviet-built Project 613 submarine (Whiskey-class), transferred to Poland in the 1960s. It served primarily as a training vessel before being decommissioned.

  • ORP Sęp (295): A Norwegian Kobben-class submarine acquired from Norway in 2002. The Kobben class, designated Type 207, are small, diesel-electric submarines. This Sęp continues the tradition of Polish submarine warfare and training capabilities, playing an important role in naval exercises and coastal defense. As of the current date, it is still in active service.

The tradition of naming submarines Sęp highlights the Polish Navy's commitment to submarine warfare and the strategic importance of these vessels in defending Poland's maritime interests.
