Ainu flag

The Ainu flag is a symbol representing the Ainu people, an indigenous group of Japan and Russia. It was designed in 1973 by Bikki Sunazawa, a prominent Ainu artist, and later formally adopted by the Ainu Association of Hokkaido in 1974.

The flag’s design features a blue background, representing the sky, the sea, and the rich natural environment of Ainu territory. Superimposed on the blue background is a red border, encompassing the flag, symbolizing the Ainu people's ceaseless progress and advancement. At the center of the flag is a white Shisaam (a type of Ainu crest) consisting of a stylized, geometric pattern. The Shisaam represents a swirling vortex, a symbol of life, vitality, and constant movement, and signifies the dynamic nature of Ainu culture.

The Ainu flag serves as a symbol of Ainu identity, culture, and heritage. It is flown at Ainu cultural events, festivals, and gatherings, both within Japan and internationally. It also represents the Ainu people's struggle for recognition of their rights, cultural preservation, and self-determination. The flag has gained increasing visibility as the Ainu have worked to raise awareness about their history and contemporary issues. It is seen as a symbol of unity and pride for the Ainu community.
