John Angell (shorthand writer)

John Angell (fl. 1758-1785) was an English schoolmaster and shorthand writer, notable for developing and promoting a system of shorthand writing. Little is known about his early life or education. Angell established a school in London where he taught, among other subjects, his system of shorthand, which he detailed in his book "Stenography or Shorthand Improved." This system was a simplification and adaptation of earlier English shorthand systems.

His work focused on making shorthand more accessible and practical for everyday use. "Stenography or Shorthand Improved" went through several editions, reflecting Angell's ongoing refinements to the system and its increasing popularity. The book provided detailed instructions on learning and applying the shorthand alphabet, along with exercises and examples. Angell's system gained a significant following and was adopted by clerks, reporters, and others who required efficient note-taking methods. He is remembered as a significant figure in the history of English shorthand.
