Sherut Leumi

Sherut Leumi (Hebrew: שירות לאומי, National Service) is an alternative national service program in Israel for individuals who are exempt from mandatory military service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). It is primarily intended for Israeli citizens who, for religious, conscientious, or other specific reasons recognized by the government, choose not to enlist in the military.

The Sherut Leumi program typically lasts for one to two years, during which volunteers dedicate their time to various community service roles. These placements can include working in hospitals, schools, elderly care facilities, special needs institutions, community centers, and organizations addressing social welfare concerns. The specific roles and responsibilities vary depending on the placement and the organization's needs.

Eligibility for Sherut Leumi is generally determined by the same criteria that grant exemption from military service, most commonly religious observance. Ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) Jews, for example, are often granted exemptions from military service but may choose to participate in Sherut Leumi. Arab citizens of Israel are also generally exempt from mandatory military service, although some volunteer for either the IDF or Sherut Leumi.

The program is administered by the Sherut Leumi Authority, a governmental body that oversees the placement and supervision of volunteers. Volunteers typically receive a small stipend to cover basic living expenses during their service.

Sherut Leumi is considered an important avenue for national contribution and social engagement for individuals who do not serve in the IDF. It allows participants to contribute to Israeli society and gain valuable experience while upholding their personal beliefs and values.
