List of Jupiter trojans (Greek camp)
The Jupiter trojans are a large group of asteroids that share Jupiter's orbit around the Sun. They reside in gravitationally stable regions known as Lagrangian points, specifically L4 and L5, located approximately 60 degrees ahead of and behind Jupiter in its orbit, respectively. The asteroids located at L4 are, by convention, named after heroes from the Greek side of the Trojan War, and are referred to as the "Greek camp."
This list encompasses notable asteroids in the Greek camp. It is important to note that the naming convention has not always been strictly adhered to, and some asteroids belonging to the Greek camp have Trojan (i.e., Trojan side of the war) names, and vice-versa. This anomaly arises primarily because asteroids were named before the discovery of numerous other trojans and the subsequent formalization of naming rules.
Key figures included in the naming of asteroids within the Greek camp include, but are not limited to: Achilles, Agamemnon, Ajax, Diomedes, Hector (a notable exception, named after a Trojan warrior), Menelaus, Nestor, Odysseus, and Patroclus. Discoveries and naming continue, so the list is not static.
The study of Jupiter trojans is important for understanding the early solar system. They are believed to be remnants of the planetesimals that formed the giant planets, and their composition provides insights into the materials present in the early solar nebula. The overall population of trojans provides insights into the orbital dynamics and history of Jupiter and the outer solar system. The composition and size distributions of the two camps (Greek and Trojan) are also of scientific interest, potentially indicating different formation locations or evolutionary histories.
