Gopi Krishna (yogi)
Gopi Krishna (1903-1984) was an Indian yogi, mystic, teacher, and author. He is primarily known for his accounts of a spontaneous kundalini awakening experience in 1937, which he documented extensively in his autobiographical book, Kundalini: The Evolutionary Energy in Man.
Gopi Krishna claimed that his experience triggered a radical transformation in his consciousness and physiology, bringing about both immense suffering and profound spiritual insights. He dedicated the rest of his life to studying kundalini, researching its effects, and advocating for its understanding and safe exploration.
His teachings emphasized the evolutionary potential of kundalini energy and its role in the development of human consciousness. He believed that a properly awakened and guided kundalini could lead to higher states of awareness and unlock latent human capabilities. However, he also cautioned against prematurely or improperly activating kundalini, warning of potential physical and psychological dangers.
Gopi Krishna established the Kundalini Research Foundation in Srinagar, Kashmir, to further the study and understanding of kundalini. He authored several books on the subject, including The Secret of Yoga, Higher Consciousness: The Evolutionary Thrust of Kundalini, and Living With Kundalini. His work has been influential in popularizing the concept of kundalini awakening in the West and continues to be studied by those interested in yoga, spirituality, and the nature of consciousness.
