Fun Home (musical)

Fun Home is a musical with music by Jeanine Tesori, and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron, based on Alison Bechdel's 2006 graphic memoir of the same name. The story concerns Alison, a young lesbian cartoonist, as she grapples with her memories of her childhood and her relationship with her closeted gay father, Bruce, a funeral home director and English teacher. The musical explores themes of family, identity, sexuality, and the search for understanding.

The narrative unfolds across three timelines: "Small Alison" (age 10), "Middle Alison" (age 19, during her first year of college), and "Adult Alison" (in her forties), who serves as the narrator and observer of her past. Adult Alison is drawing her graphic memoir, and the musical frequently moves between her present and the past she is trying to understand.

Fun Home premiered Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2013, and opened on Broadway at Circle in the Square Theatre in 2015. The Broadway production was directed by Sam Gold and starred Michael Cerveris as Bruce, Judy Kuhn as Helen (Alison's mother), and Beth Malone as Adult Alison. Sydney Lucas, Emily Skeggs, and Alexandra Socha originated the roles of Small Alison, Medium Alison, and Adult Alison, respectively, in the Off-Broadway production.

Fun Home received critical acclaim for its innovative storytelling, complex characters, and poignant exploration of its themes. It won five Tony Awards in 2015, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Score, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Actor in a Musical (Michael Cerveris). It also won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making it one of only a handful of musicals to achieve this honor.
