Edward Tyng (military officer)

Edward Tyng (1644 – 1718) was a prominent merchant, military officer, and political figure in colonial Massachusetts. He is best known for his role in the Indian Wars, particularly King William's War and Queen Anne's War, during which he commanded frontier defenses and participated in expeditions against French and Native American settlements.

Tyng was born in Boston, the son of William Tyng, an early Treasurer of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He followed his father into mercantile pursuits, establishing himself as a successful merchant in Boston. He also held several positions in the colonial militia, rising through the ranks to become a Colonel.

During King William's War (1689-1697), Tyng was active in the defense of the Maine frontier, which was subject to frequent raids by French and Native American forces. He commanded militia units tasked with protecting settlements and pursuing raiding parties. He gained a reputation for his effectiveness and bravery during this period.

Tyng played a similar role during Queen Anne's War (1702-1713). He continued to command frontier defenses and participated in several military expeditions. He was involved in the planning and execution of attacks against French and Native American villages, aiming to disrupt their ability to wage war against the English colonies.

In addition to his military service, Tyng also held several political offices in Massachusetts. He served as a representative to the Massachusetts General Court and held various local government positions. He was a respected member of the colonial elite and played a significant role in the political and economic life of the colony.

Edward Tyng died in Boston in 1718. He is remembered as a capable military leader, a successful merchant, and a prominent figure in colonial Massachusetts history. His descendants continued to play important roles in the region for generations.
