Greg Smith (ice hockey)
Greg Smith (born January 4, 1955) is a retired professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) and World Hockey Association (WHA). A defenseman, Smith was known for his tough and physical style of play.
Smith was drafted 10th overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft. Before turning professional, he played junior hockey for the Ottawa 67's. He began his NHL career with the Bruins in the 1975-76 season.
During his career, Smith played for the Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers, and Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL. He also played for the New England Whalers in the WHA before the league merged with the NHL.
Smith accumulated a significant number of penalty minutes throughout his NHL career, reflecting his aggressive playing style. While not a prolific scorer, his role on his teams was primarily as a defensive presence and enforcer. He retired from professional hockey in the late 1980s.
