Pinatubo (horse)

Pinatubo (foaled March 4, 2017) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the highest-rated two-year-olds in modern history, earning a rating of 128 from Timeform following an undefeated season in 2019.

Background

Pinatubo is a bay colt bred in Ireland by Emerald Bloodstock out of the mare Lava Flow, who was sired by Dalakhani. He was sired by Shamardal, a leading sire of stakes winners.

Racing Career

• 2019: Two-Year-Old Season

Pinatubo had an outstanding two-year-old season, winning all six of his races. His victories included the Woodcote Stakes, Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère at Longchamp, and the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket. His impressive performances led to comparisons with Frankel and other legendary racehorses. His Dewhurst Stakes victory, in particular, stood out due to the significant margin of victory (nine lengths) and the impressive time.

• 2020: Three-Year-Old Season

As a three-year-old, Pinatubo's performances were less dominant than in his juvenile year. He finished third in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, third in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, and second in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. He secured victories in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard Jacques le Marois at Deauville and the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.

• 2021: Four-Year-Old Season

Pinatubo continued racing as a four-year-old, with his best performance being a second-place finish in the Prix d'Ispahan at Longchamp.

Retirement

Pinatubo was retired from racing at the end of the 2021 season to stand as a stallion at Dalham Hall Stud.
