Tao Ho

Tao Ho (何弢, Hé Tāo), born in Shanghai in 1936 and died in Hong Kong in 2019, was a renowned Hong Kong-based architect, artist, and designer. He was known for his distinctive blend of Eastern philosophical principles, particularly Taoism, with Western architectural modernism.

Ho received his architectural education at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. After working with prominent architects like Buckminster Fuller, he established his own practice in Hong Kong in the 1960s.

His architectural works include residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, many of which incorporate environmentally conscious designs and reflect his commitment to integrating architecture with nature and human well-being. Notable projects include the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the Hong Kong Coliseum, and the Hong Kong Taoist Association's headquarters.

Beyond architecture, Ho was also a prolific artist, working in calligraphy, painting, and sculpture. His artistic creations, like his architecture, often drew inspiration from Taoist philosophy and emphasized harmony, balance, and the interconnectedness of all things. He was a respected figure in the Hong Kong art scene and his works have been exhibited internationally.

Ho's work was not limited to traditional architectural and artistic pursuits; he also engaged in design projects ranging from furniture to graphic design. His diverse talents and integrated approach made him a significant figure in the development of Hong Kong's modern architectural and design landscape.
