Arrowsmith (comics)
Arrowsmith is a comic book series created by Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco, published by WildStorm (an imprint of DC Comics). The series is set in an alternate history version of World War I, where magic is real and integrated into military technology and strategies.
The primary character is Fletcher Arrowsmith, a young American who enlists in the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). He discovers he is a "Fletcher," a human with the latent ability to cast spells and enchant objects. He's sent to a special training program where he learns to harness his powers and fight against the Central Powers, who also use magical weaponry and creatures.
The world of Arrowsmith features a blend of historical accuracy and fantastical elements. Zeppelins are powered by dragons, dogfights involve magical spells, and infantry units are supported by golems and elementals. The series explores themes of war, prejudice, the nature of magic, and the moral complexities of using fantastical powers in conflict.
Several storylines delve into the politics and social structures of this alternate Earth, including the treatment of magical beings and the ethical considerations of using magic as a weapon. The series is noted for its detailed world-building, complex characters, and exploration of the consequences of integrating magic into a real-world historical event.
The series consists of two mini-series: Arrowsmith: A Soldier's Tale (2003-2004) and Arrowsmith: Behind Enemy Lines (2022-2023).
