6th Corps (Afghanistan)

The 6th Corps was one of several corps-level formations within the Afghan National Army (ANA). Corps in the ANA typically controlled several brigades and were responsible for a specific geographic region of Afghanistan. The 6th Corps operated primarily in the western part of the country, including Herat province.

Its primary role was to provide security, combat insurgent activity (particularly from the Taliban), and maintain stability within its area of responsibility. The 6th Corps, like other ANA corps, worked closely with international security forces, particularly those from the United States and other NATO countries, as part of the Resolute Support Mission. This cooperation included training, advising, and operational support.

The corps structure and effectiveness varied over time, influenced by factors such as funding, training levels, equipment availability, and leadership. The ANA, including the 6th Corps, ultimately dissolved following the collapse of the Afghan government in 2021 and the subsequent takeover by the Taliban. The fate of its personnel and equipment is largely unknown.
