Gilbert Debenham (died 1481)

Gilbert Debenham was a prominent figure in 15th-century England, primarily associated with Suffolk. He was a landowner, administrator, and political figure of some significance during the reigns of Edward IV and Richard III.

Debenham's family held considerable land in Suffolk, and he himself acquired further property and influence through his own efforts and strategic marriages. He served in various local administrative roles, including as a Justice of the Peace.

His political allegiances appear to have shifted with the changing tides of the Wars of the Roses. While initially associated with the Yorkist cause, he later appears to have accommodated the brief Lancastrian restoration under Henry VI, before reaffirming his loyalty to Edward IV. Evidence suggests he was a pragmatic individual focused on maintaining his position and protecting his interests within a turbulent political landscape.

Gilbert Debenham is perhaps best known for his involvement in the suppression of a rebellion in Suffolk led by John Green, a servant of the Duke of Suffolk, in 1469. Debenham played a key role in quelling the uprising and restoring order in the region.

He married twice. His first wife was Katherine Plaiters, and his second wife was Mary Brewes. He had children from both marriages, securing the continuation of the Debenham family line. He died in 1481.
