Durbar (horse)
Durbar was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire best known for winning the 1914 Epsom Derby. Foaled in 1911, he was bred and owned by Solomon Joel. Durbar was trained by Charles Morton at Wantage in Berkshire.
Durbar was a large, powerful colt, initially considered somewhat backward, but he showed promise as a two-year-old, winning several races including the New Stakes at Ascot.
His three-year-old season was highlighted by his victory in the Derby. Ridden by Willie Higgs, Durbar started at odds of 100/8 and won by a neck from Kennymore. The race was notable for its large field and the subsequent controversies surrounding the running of the race.
After the Derby, Durbar was sold to an Argentinian syndicate. He continued to race, but did not achieve the same level of success as he had in England. He was later retired to stud in Argentina.
Durbar's progeny did not achieve significant success on the racetrack, and he is not considered to be a particularly influential sire in Thoroughbred breeding. He is, however, remembered for his unexpected victory in the 1914 Derby.
