Maud (wherry)

A Norfolk wherry named Maud. Norfolk wherries were traditionally single-masted cargo-carrying vessels that operated on the Broads of Norfolk and Suffolk in England. Maud, like other wherries, would have been specifically designed to navigate the shallow, narrow waterways of the region. Typically, the name "Maud" would refer to a specific, individual wherry, identifiable by its registration and owner. Wherries played a vital role in the transportation of goods such as malt, coal, and farm produce before the advent of modern road transport. Some wherries, known as pleasure wherries, were adapted for passenger use, often featuring luxurious accommodations. The working wherries declined in use through the early 20th century, but a number have been preserved and restored, and are now enjoyed as historic vessels.
