Vasily Sergeyevich Smirnov (painter)
Vasily Sergeyevich Smirnov (Russian: Василий Сергеевич Смирнов; 1858 – 1890) was a Russian painter associated with the academic style. He is best known for historical scenes, often depicting events from antiquity and Russian history.
Smirnov studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. He received a number of medals for his work during his studies and earned the title of "Artist" (first-class) in 1885. He was a member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki), joining in 1888.
His notable works include paintings depicting scenes from Roman history, such as "The Death of Nero" and "Messalina Leaving the Court." He also painted scenes from Russian history and genre paintings.
Smirnov died young, at the age of 32, cutting short a promising career. His works are held in major Russian museums, including the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
