The Quest (1996 film)

The Quest, also known as Dragon Eyes in some countries, is a 1996 American martial arts film directed by and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme in his directorial debut. The film also stars Roger Moore, James Remar, and Janet Gunn.

The story follows Christopher Dubois (Van Damme), a streetwise pickpocket and orphaned con artist in 1920s New York City. He accidentally stows away on a ship bound for Southeast Asia. Once discovered, he's sold into servitude but eventually escapes and is rescued by Lord Edgar Dobbs (Moore), a British adventurer.

Dobbs recognizes Dubois's martial arts potential and trains him to compete in the "Ghang-gheng," a secret, no-holds-barred fighting tournament held every four years in the Lost City, a hidden enclave deep within Tibet. The tournament brings together the greatest fighters from all nations, each representing their country and vying for the Golden Dragon trophy, a solid gold statue of immense value.

Dubois represents the United States in the Ghang-gheng, facing a diverse array of opponents with unique fighting styles. He must not only overcome these formidable fighters but also navigate the political intrigue surrounding the tournament and prevent a ruthless group of mercenaries, led by Maxie Devine (Remar), from stealing the Golden Dragon. The ultimate prize isn't just the Golden Dragon, but the honor of representing his country and proving himself as a worthy martial artist. The film combines elements of action, adventure, and martial arts tournament films.
