Pincoya

The Pincoya is a mythical water spirit or sea goddess prominent in the folklore of the Chilote people of southern Chile, particularly on the island of Chiloé. She is often described as a beautiful woman with long, flowing hair, who rises from the sea to signal abundance or scarcity of fish and shellfish.

Her primary role is as a fertility figure for the sea. When the Pincoya performs a ritual dance on the shore, facing the ocean, it is believed to ensure a bountiful harvest of marine resources. If she dances facing away from the sea, it foretells a time of scarcity and hardship for fishermen. The dance itself is often described as joyful and lively, reflecting her benevolent nature.

She is considered the daughter of Millalobo (king of the sea) and Huenchula (a beautiful woman transformed into a sea spirit), and sister of the Pincoy, who also assists in protecting marine life. The Pincoya is deeply intertwined with the traditional fishing practices and beliefs of the Chilote people, and her presence is invoked in various rituals and ceremonies aimed at ensuring the well-being and prosperity of the community. The appearance of the Pincoya is generally considered a positive omen, signifying a close relationship between the people and the sea. Offerings and prayers are often made to her in gratitude for her blessings.
