Bedeau
Bedeau (French: bedeau, from Old French bedel, ultimately from Germanic bidal meaning "messenger") is a term used primarily in French-speaking contexts to refer to a church officer or beadle. The role is similar to that of a verger in Anglican churches or a sexton in other Christian denominations.
A bedeau is typically responsible for maintaining order and decorum during religious services. Their duties often include:
- Leading processions.
- Seating congregants.
- Announcing different parts of the service.
- Maintaining the cleanliness of the church.
- Sometimes assisting with collections.
Historically, the bedeau held a more significant position and might have also served as a messenger for the church or the local bishop. While their duties have generally diminished in scope over time, the role of bedeau remains present in many churches, particularly in France and French-speaking regions. The position is often filled by a lay person within the church community.
