Ed Oliver (golfer)

Edward "Ed" Oliver (born July 28, 1915, Covington, Tennessee; died May 16, 1961, Wilmington, Delaware) was an American professional golfer. Known for his powerful physique and nicknamed "Porky," Oliver was one of the leading players on the PGA Tour from the late 1930s through the 1950s.

Oliver turned professional in 1936. He won the Philadelphia Open Championship three times (1940, 1941, and 1947), the Western Open in 1940, and the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am in 1953. He also represented the United States in the Ryder Cup teams of 1937, 1939, 1949, 1951, and 1953.

Despite his numerous victories and consistent high finishes, Oliver is perhaps best remembered for near-misses in major championships. He finished second in the 1940 U.S. Open (losing an 18-hole playoff to Lawson Little), and second in the 1953 PGA Championship (losing in the final match to Walter Burkemo). He also had several other top-ten finishes in major championships throughout his career.

Oliver was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.
