The callsign dates back to British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC), which operated from 1939 to 1974. BOAC adopted "Speedbird" as a branding element and incorporated it into its livery, featuring a distinctive "Speedbird" logo – a stylized bird in flight. The logo was designed in 1932 by Theyre Lee-Elliott and initially used by Imperial Airways, BOAC's predecessor.
