Aulon (Attica)
Aulon (Ancient Greek: Αυλών) was a deme of ancient Attica, belonging to the phyle of Antiochis. It was located on the eastern coast of Attica, south of Brauron and north of Prasiai. Its location is generally identified with the modern Avlaki (Αυλάκι) near Porto Rafti.
The deme was known for its sanctuary of Artemis Aulonia. This sanctuary is mentioned in inscriptions and literary sources, indicating its importance to the local population. The name "Aulon" suggests a narrow pass or defile, which likely describes the geographical features of the area where the deme was situated.
Archaeological evidence, including inscriptions and building remains, supports the identification of the site as the location of the ancient deme of Aulon. While not as prominent as some other Athenian demes, Aulon played a role in the political and religious life of ancient Attica.
