Anagni

Anagni is a town and comune in the province of Frosinone, Lazio, central Italy, situated on a hill overlooking the Valle Latina. Historically significant, it boasts a rich history dating back to pre-Roman times.

History

Anagni was one of the most important cities of the Hernici, an Italic tribe related to the Latins. It was a member of the Latin League and later allied with Rome. The city was conquered by the Romans in 306 BC and became a Roman municipium. Anagni flourished during the Roman Empire.

In the Middle Ages, Anagni became a prominent center of papal power. It was the birthplace of four popes: Innocent III, Alexander IV, Gregory IX, and Boniface VIII. The city was often a refuge for the papacy during periods of political instability in Rome. In 1303, Boniface VIII was famously attacked in Anagni by agents of King Philip IV of France, an event known as the Outrage of Anagni.
