Angamuco
Angamuco is a Purépecha archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Michoacán. It is characterized by a large concentration of volcanic cones and ancient structures, primarily yácatas, which are tiered, T-shaped pyramids characteristic of Purépecha architecture.
Angamuco, sometimes referred to as "the urban zone" associated with the larger Purépecha empire centered at Tzintzuntzan, presents evidence of complex urban planning and a high population density during its peak occupation, which is believed to have been between 1000 and 1350 AD. Unlike many other pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cities, Angamuco lacks a readily identifiable central plaza. Instead, the site is composed of numerous distinct architectural complexes spread across the landscape.
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology has been crucial in mapping and analyzing Angamuco, revealing a far greater number of structures than previously known from traditional archaeological survey methods. This technology allows archaeologists to "see through" vegetation and create detailed 3D models of the terrain, uncovering buried features and providing insights into the site's layout and organization.
The site's significance lies in its potential to provide a deeper understanding of Purépecha civilization, including their social organization, economic systems, and political structures. Ongoing research and analysis of the site continues to unveil new information about this important pre-Columbian culture.
