Fred Bell (baseball)

Fred Bell (born February 10, 1949, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died December 22, 2011, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) was an American professional baseball player. A shortstop, Bell played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1972 to 1983 for the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, and New York Mets.

Bell was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2nd round of the 1967 MLB draft, but was traded to the Texas Rangers before reaching the major leagues. He debuted with the Rangers in 1972, becoming their starting shortstop. He was known for his solid defense and above-average arm.

In 1977, Bell was traded to the San Diego Padres. He played there until 1980, continuing to be a reliable fielder. He was later traded to the New York Mets, where he played for three seasons before retiring.

After his playing career, Bell remained involved in baseball, working as a scout. He died in 2011 at the age of 62.
