Sanguine

Sanguine describes a temperament characterized by cheerfulness, optimism, confidence, and a generally positive outlook. Historically, sanguine was one of the four temperaments recognized in ancient Greek medicine and philosophy, believed to be associated with a predominance of blood (Latin: sanguis) in the body.

The sanguine personality is typically outgoing, sociable, and enjoys being around people. Sanguine individuals are often seen as charismatic and are comfortable in social settings. They tend to be impulsive and pleasure-seeking, and can sometimes struggle with commitment and follow-through. They are generally forgiving and have a high tolerance for stress, bouncing back quickly from setbacks.

In modern psychology, the concept of the four temperaments (sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic) is not considered a scientific model of personality. However, the terms are still used in popular culture and self-help contexts to describe general personality traits. The sanguine temperament, in particular, aligns with traits often associated with extroversion and optimism. While not a medically recognized diagnostic tool, the term sanguine is frequently used to describe someone with a positive and hopeful disposition.
