Shasta (mascot)

Shasta refers to the mascot of the University of Houston. The original Shasta was a live cougar, first appearing as the mascot in 1947. The name "Shasta" originated when student Alton Ray Smith found a cougar cub on a highway in West Texas after its mother was killed. Smith brought the cub back to campus, and a contest was held to name it. A student named Joe Rand proposed "Shasta," a portmanteau of "She" loves "Texas U," a phrase related to the university's aspirations.

The original live Shasta was followed by several other live cougars who served as mascots until the late 1980s. Concerns about animal welfare led to the phasing out of live mascots. Currently, Shasta is represented by costumed students who appear at sporting events and university functions. The costumed Shasta mascots, male and female versions, are selected through tryouts and represent the spirit and traditions of the University of Houston. They embody school pride and interact with students, alumni, and fans.

The representation of Shasta has evolved over time, but the symbolism of the cougar remains a powerful symbol of the University of Houston's athletic teams and overall identity. The cougar is meant to represent strength, agility, and ferocity, qualities the university hopes its students and athletes embody.
