Skirret (tool)
A skirret is a specialized hand tool used primarily in the craft of leatherworking. It is designed for accurately marking parallel lines on leather, often for stitching lines or decorative borders.
The skirret typically consists of a handle, a stem or arm, and an adjustable marking point or blade. The marking point can be adjusted along the stem to create lines at varying distances from the edge of the leather. A thumbscrew or similar mechanism usually secures the marking point in place once the desired distance is set.
To use a skirret, the user holds the handle and rests the edge of the tool's stem against the edge of the leather. They then drag the skirret along the edge, causing the marking point to create a consistent, parallel line. Some skirrets have a single marking point, while others feature multiple points for creating multiple parallel lines simultaneously.
Skirrets are valuable tools for leatherworkers aiming for precision and consistency in their projects. The lines created by a skirret serve as a guide for stitching, tooling, or other decorative elements, ensuring a professional and uniform finish. The tool helps to prevent wandering lines and errors that can occur when marking by hand.
