Philip Cohen (British biochemist)

Philip Cohen (born 1945) is a British biochemist renowned for his research on protein phosphorylation and its role in cell signalling. He is particularly known for his work on protein kinases and protein phosphatases, the enzymes responsible for adding and removing phosphate groups from proteins, respectively.

Cohen received his PhD from the University of Dundee, where he later established his own research group. He has held professorships at the University of Dundee, including the Royal Society Research Professor.

His research has significantly advanced the understanding of signal transduction pathways and their involvement in various cellular processes, including metabolism, cell growth, and immune responses. His work has had a profound impact on the development of drugs targeting protein kinases for the treatment of cancer and other diseases.

Cohen is a Fellow of the Royal Society and has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to biochemistry, including the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine and the Royal Medal. He has also been actively involved in promoting science education and public engagement with science.
