USS Wabash (ID-1824)
USS Wabash (ID-1824) was a transport ship commissioned into the United States Navy during World War I. Originally the German passenger liner SS Friedrich der Grosse, it was seized in American ports when the United States entered the war in 1917. Renamed Wabash after a river in the United States, the ship was refitted for naval service.
Assigned to the Cruiser and Transport Force, Wabash operated primarily between the United States and France, transporting troops and supplies to the European theater of war. After the Armistice in November 1918, Wabash participated in returning American soldiers back to the United States.
Following the conclusion of its transport duties, USS Wabash was decommissioned and returned to the United States Shipping Board in 1919. It was subsequently sold back to its original owners, the North German Lloyd shipping company, who restored its original name, SS Friedrich der Grosse, and resumed passenger service after further refitting. The vessel continued in commercial use until it was scrapped in 1937.
