Skarpnäck (borough)
Skarpnäck is a borough (Swedish: stadsdelsområde) in the southern part of Stockholm, Sweden. It was formed in 1998 through the merging of the former boroughs of Skarpnäcksfältet and Bagarmossen.
Geography and Demographics:
Skarpnäck borough consists of the districts of Bagarmossen, Björkhagen, Enskededalen, Flaten, Hammarbyhöjden, Kärrtorp, Orhem, Pungpinan, Skarpnäcks Gård, and Tallkrogen. It is characterized by a mix of residential areas, green spaces, and commercial centers. As of the most recent statistics, Skarpnäck has a diverse population with a significant number of residents born outside of Sweden.
History:
The area of Skarpnäck has a history dating back centuries, but significant urban development began in the mid-20th century. Many of the residential areas were built as part of the "Million Programme" (Swedish: Miljonprogrammet) era, a large-scale housing project aimed at addressing housing shortages in Sweden. Skarpnäcks Gård, a former estate, gives the borough its name.
Transportation:
Skarpnäck is well-connected to the rest of Stockholm via the Stockholm Metro (Tunnelbana), specifically the Green Line. Several stations, including Skarpnäck, Bagarmossen, Kärrtorp, and Hammarbyhöjden, serve the borough. Bus lines also provide extensive local transportation options.
