Chief of Staff of the Navy (Spain)
The Chief of Staff of the Navy (Spain) (Spanish: Jefe de Estado Mayor de la Armada, abbreviated as AJEMA) is the highest-ranking officer of the Spanish Navy. They are responsible for the operational readiness, training, and administration of the Navy. The AJEMA reports directly to the Chief of the Defence Staff (JEMAD) and is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The role encompasses advising the Minister of Defence and the JEMAD on all naval matters, overseeing the implementation of defence policy within the Navy, and representing the Spanish Navy in international forums. The Chief of Staff of the Navy is also responsible for managing the Navy's budget, personnel, and equipment. They ensure the Navy's compliance with national and international laws and regulations.
The appointment is made by the Minister of Defence upon the recommendation of the Prime Minister. Typically, the position is held by a Vice Admiral or Admiral with significant experience in naval command and staff roles.
