Sundown (Rank and File album)
Sundown is the debut studio album by American country rock band Rank and File. It was released in 1982 on Slash Records. The album is considered a seminal work in the cowpunk genre, blending traditional country music with elements of punk rock and new wave.
The album's title track, "Sundown," is a mid-tempo country-tinged song with introspective lyrics. Other notable tracks include "Amanda Ruth," "Rank and File," and "My Man's Got a Job." Sundown features the songwriting and vocal talents of Chip and Tony Kinman, former members of the punk band The Dils, alongside guitarist Dave Alvin, who would later join The Blasters.
Critically acclaimed upon its release, Sundown has been praised for its innovative fusion of genres and its authentic portrayal of American roots music. While not a commercial success initially, it has gained a cult following over the years and is now recognized as an influential album in the alternative country scene. It is often cited as a key record in the development of the genre, helping to bridge the gap between punk rock and traditional country music.
