Ardatov was founded in 1694 as the settlement of Novotroitskoye. It was renamed Ardatov in 1780 and granted town status that same year by decree of Catherine the Great. The name is believed to derive from the Mordvinic name Ardat, possibly meaning "clear river" or "settlement on the river".
