Gattinara

Gattinara is a dry red Italian wine produced in the province of Vercelli, Piedmont. It is made primarily from the Nebbiolo grape, locally known as Spanna, with a minimum of 90% required. Up to 10% combined of Bonarda di Gattinara and/or Vespolina may also be used.

The wine is named after the town of Gattinara, where it is produced. The vineyards are located on the slopes of the Sesia Valley, characterized by volcanic soil and a cool climate, which contributes to the wine's distinct character.

Gattinara was granted Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) status in 1967 and Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status in 1990, the highest level of Italian wine designation.

Gattinara wines are typically characterized by their ruby-garnet color, aromas of red fruit, spice, and floral notes, and a firm tannic structure. They are known for their aging potential and often require several years of cellaring to fully develop.
