Charles Brown (Labour politician)

Charles Brown (1887 – 1968) was a British Labour politician. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Mansfield from 1929 to 1931 and again from 1935 to 1959.

Born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, Brown worked as a lecturer for the Workers' Educational Association (WEA) before entering parliament. His involvement with the WEA demonstrated his commitment to adult education and social reform, themes that would characterise his political career.

In Parliament, Brown was a consistent advocate for the working class and the mining communities, which were prevalent in his Mansfield constituency. He was a strong supporter of nationalisation, social welfare programs, and improved working conditions. He served on various parliamentary committees and participated in debates on a range of issues, including unemployment, housing, and foreign policy.

Brown lost his seat in the 1931 general election, which saw a landslide victory for the National Government. However, he regained the Mansfield seat in 1935 and held it for over two decades. He retired from parliament in 1959.

While not a front-bench politician, Charles Brown was a dedicated constituency MP known for his hard work and commitment to his constituents. He was a product of the Labour movement and a strong voice for the working class in Parliament.
