Pistole (Scottish coin)

The pistole was a Scottish coin introduced in the late 17th century. It was modeled after, and often equivalent in value to, the contemporary French gold coin of the same name, the Louis d'or, also frequently referred to as a pistole. The value of the Scottish pistole fluctuated over time, generally ranging from around £12 to £14 Scots. Its weight and fineness were also intended to mirror those of the French coin it emulated. The Scottish pistole circulated as part of Scotland's independent coinage before the Act of Union in 1707, which unified the currencies of Scotland and England. After the Union, Scottish coinage was gradually withdrawn and replaced by English currency.
