Sancoale

Sancoale is a village located in Mormugao taluka, South Goa district, in the state of Goa, India. It is situated near the Zuari River and is known for its historical significance, particularly its association with the ruins of a former church, the Church of Our Lady of Health.

Historically, Sancoale was an important center for Christian missionary activity in Goa. The Church of Our Lady of Health, also referred to as the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Saúde in Portuguese, was a large and prominent church constructed in the 16th century. However, it was abandoned in the 19th century due to outbreaks of disease and a dwindling population. Today, only ruins remain, serving as a historical landmark.

The village is connected to other parts of Goa by road and is located relatively close to Dabolim Airport. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, fishing, and small-scale businesses. While the ruins of the church are a point of interest for tourists, Sancoale remains a relatively quiet and traditional Goan village. The village also has other smaller churches and chapels that are still in use.
