Ben Moore (judge)

Ben Moore is a former justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama. He served as Chief Justice from 2013 to 2017, and as an Associate Justice from 2001 to 2007. He is known for his strong conservative stances and controversial opinions, particularly concerning religious freedom and same-sex marriage.

Moore was removed from office as Chief Justice by the Alabama Court of the Judiciary in 2017 for violating judicial ethics. The charges stemmed from his directive to probate judges in the state to disregard the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, which legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. He argued that the Alabama Constitution defined marriage as between one man and one woman. The Court of the Judiciary found that his actions demonstrated a disregard for the rule of law and constituted willful disregard of, or failure to perform, his duties.

Prior to his judicial career, Moore served as a circuit judge in Etowah County, Alabama. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law. Following his removal from the bench, he unsuccessfully campaigned for the United States Senate in 2017.
