Kojima (Hokkaido)

Kojima, also transliterated as Ko-jima, is a small, uninhabited island located off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan. It is situated in the Sea of Japan (East Sea), near the southwestern tip of the Oshima Peninsula. The island is administratively part of the town of Matsumae, Hokkaido.

Geographically, Kojima is characterized by its rocky terrain and sparse vegetation. Its primary significance lies in its strategic location for maritime activities, including fishing and navigation. The island features a lighthouse to aid ships traversing the Tsugaru Strait.

Historically, Kojima has served as a navigational landmark and a fishing ground for local communities. Due to its remote location and lack of natural resources beyond the surrounding sea, it has never been permanently inhabited.

The waters surrounding Kojima are known for their rich marine biodiversity, making it a valuable area for scientific research and conservation efforts. The area is important for various fish species and seabirds.
